Heidelberg is a city on the Neckar River in southwest Germany. It is known for its historic university, which was founded in the 14th century. The Gothic Heiliggeistkirche overlooks the café-lined market square in the middle of the old town. The red sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle are a well-known example of Renaissance architecture and stand on the Königstuhl hill.
